Hey there, fellow daredevils!
My latest beer expedition led me to the legendary Russian River Pliny the Elder, a double IPA thatโs as bold and daring as visiting ancle Putinโs realm with an American flag t-shir singing the Beatlesโ Back to the USSR. But before I delve into the hoppy wonder that is Pliny, let me explain the details of this Russian River Pliny the Elder.
Russian Rivers Pliny the Elder, a known beer, from the Russian River Brewing Company in Santa Rosa, California pays tribute to Pliny the Elder (Gaius Plinius Secundus) a naturalist and author from the 1st century AD. He was renowned for his writings on history including insights into the hop plant, a crucial ingredient in brewing beer.
But, why Russian? It turns out that The Russian River Brewing Company takes its name from the Russian River, a waterway, in Northern California. Situated in Santa Rosa, California the brewery is closely linked to this river. The choice of name highlights the brewerys connection to the regions geography and history than any ties to Russia. The Russian River holds a presence in the area inspiring various businesses and landmarks to adopt its name making it a suitable and familiar choice, for the brewery.
Well, I didnโt know that at the time and I was ready to book my next trip to the ะะฐัััะบะฐ ะ ะพััะธั (Mother Russia for those who donโt speak russian. I have to say that I was a little bit disappointed, since the protective figure and deep sense of a national pride and cultural heritage made me think this was going to be a unique experience. Yes, I know, the concept of “Mother Russia” evokes feelings of loyalty, patriotism, and a strong emotional connection to the homelandโฆ if you are Russian!
This is very confusing, right? Whatโs the reason for naming Russian River to a river in California? I did a little digging, not only because I was genuinely interested in this particular beer, but also because of my past heritage. It turns out that The Russian River, in California got its name from the settlers who set up Fort Ross and other communities along the Northern California coast in the 1800s. These settlers, from the Russian American Company were involved in fur trading and farming activities. They originally called the river “Slavyanka River,“. It later became known as the Russian River. What happened to the Cold War!
In summary, established in 1812, Fort Ross was the southernmost point of colonization efforts in North America. The presence of these settlements and their interactions with American tribes and other settlers had a lasting impact, including naming landmarks such, as the Russian River.
Any way, the brewery selected this name to honor its roots in hop history and its trailblazing role in the craft beer industry. Pliny the Elder stands out as an IPA celebrated for its hop profiles and harmonious bitterness making it a beloved choice among beer connoisseurs. This brew has earned status within the craft beer community due to its quality, creativity and commitment, to brewing excellence.
Pliny the Elder is the Holy Grail for hop enthusiasts. This double IPA from Californiaโs Russian River Brewing Company is the epitome of what a great IPA should be. The first sip is like a punch of hops to the faceโin the best possible way. Itโs intensely hoppy, with flavors of pine, resin, and a hint of citrus.
What sets Pliny apart is its balance. Despite the high hop content, itโs incredibly smooth and drinkable. The malt backbone is robust enough to support the hops without overpowering them, creating a harmonious blend thatโs both bold and refined. Itโs like the perfect parachute deploymentโsmooth, reliable, and exhilarating.
The aroma is intoxicating, with a bouquet of pine, floral, and citrus notes that make you want to dive right in. Each sip is a new adventure, revealing layers of complexity that keep you coming back for more. Itโs no wonder Pliny the Elder is one of the most sought-after beers in the craft beer world.
As I savored this hoppy masterpiece, I couldnโt help but laugh at the irony. Here I was, enjoying the balance and precision of Pliny the Elder, while my last skydive had been a chaotic mess. Maybe next time, I should pack a couple of bottles of Pliny in my gear for good luck!
Whether youโre a hophead or just someone who appreciates a well-crafted beer, Pliny the Elder is a must-try. Itโs a testament to the art of brewing and a reminder that sometimes, the best adventures are the ones we share over a great beer.
